Brake rotor and caliper with the wheel removed

Care for your vehicle

Changes in braking deserve prompt attention. We offer brake and rotor service to address wear, noise, and stopping concerns.

Brake pads, rotors, calipers, and hydraulic components work together. A noise or pedal vibration alone does not identify which part needs repair; the condition of the system matters.

Before your visit

Tell us when the noise or vibration occurs. If the pedal sinks, braking is weak, or the vehicle is difficult to stop, arrange a tow instead of driving it to the shop.

More than replacing brake pads

Brake service begins with understanding how the vehicle stops and the condition of the parts working together. Pads and rotors provide friction, calipers apply pressure, and the hydraulic system transfers pedal force. Uneven wear, corrosion, a sticking component, or a hydraulic concern can affect the repair needed. A complete picture matters more than a single noise.

When to arrange an inspection

  • Squealing, scraping, or grinding while braking
  • Pedal pulsation or vibration during a stop
  • Pulling, increased stopping distance, or a change in pedal feel

Understand the recommended brake work

Ask about remaining pad material, rotor condition, and whether wear is similar on both sides of an axle. Rotor replacement or resurfacing depends on measured condition and applicable specifications. Brake fluid has its own maintenance requirements; pad replacement does not automatically renew it. Mention any warning lights and whether the concern appears during light braking, hard braking, or after the vehicle has been parked.

Questions about Brakes & Rotors

Troubleshooting Guide

View All Troubleshooting Guide
Why do my brakes squeal?

Moisture, friction-material wear, or hardware can cause squealing. A persistent or new noise should be inspected by R & S Automotive Center; sound alone cannot confirm how much pad material remains.

What does grinding while braking mean?

Grinding can indicate worn friction material or another brake fault. Avoid further driving and arrange an inspection with R & S Automotive Center; use a tow if stopping performance is reduced or the grinding is severe.

Why does my brake pedal feel soft or sink?

Hydraulic problems or air in the brake system can affect pedal feel. If the pedal sinks or stopping power changes, stop safely and arrange a tow. R & S Automotive Center can inspect the system before the vehicle returns to the road.

Why does the car shake when I apply the brakes?

Brake components can contribute to vibration, but tires and suspension may also play a role. Tell R & S Automotive Center whether the vibration occurs only when braking and where you feel it.

Why is the brake warning light still on?

If the parking brake is released and the warning remains, a brake-system concern may be present. Check the meaning in your owner’s manual. With altered pedal feel or weak braking, stop and arrange a tow to R & S Automotive Center or another repair facility.

Service Questions

View All Service Questions
Do you service brakes and rotors?

Yes. R & S Automotive Center offers brake and rotor service. Tell us when the noise or vibration occurs. If the pedal sinks, braking is weak, or the vehicle is difficult to stop, arrange a tow instead of driving it to the shop. Call 208-356-0786 to discuss your vehicle and arrange service.

Do rotors always need replacement with new pads?

Not always. Rotor thickness, surface condition, damage, and manufacturer limits affect the decision. An inspection is needed to determine whether a rotor can remain in service, be resurfaced where appropriate, or should be replaced.

Is a squeak always a worn-out brake pad?

No. Moisture, surface corrosion, pad material, and worn or loose components can cause noise. Persistent noise, grinding, or a change in stopping performance deserves an inspection.

Is brake fluid service the same as replacing pads?

No. Pads are friction components, while fluid transfers hydraulic pressure. Fluid maintenance follows the vehicle’s requirements and system condition, and is a separate service consideration.
